RICHARD M ZUST USN

1941-2012

CENTRAL WHIDBEY LION

Dick was an organ donor. At his passing, Dick's cornea's were donated and he has given the gift of sight to another person. The family received a letter that said his cornea's had been successfully transplanted.  Even after his passing, Dick continues to help people.  Sounds a lot like the Dick Zust we knew!

Central Whidbey Lion Volunteers are needed to help cook, serve, and cleanup at the Luncheon.  Can or do you want to help?  Contact Kathy if you are available that day to help with the set up/serving of lunch.  Contact Gary if you want to help cook.  Set up will begin 0830 am for coffee and donuts at the Pavilion, just to the left of the entrance to the park, and set up will begin at 10:30am for lunch. If you wish to help with the clean up, contact Coupeville Lion Dennis Bullock at  d_bullock@frontier.com (d underscore bullock@frontier.com)

FYI for all volunteers:  Parking:  NO DISCOVERY PASS is necessary, and you will NOT be charged for parking.    See Kathy and sign up on the “volunteer sign up” sheet before heading out for the cleanup.  Cleanup projects begins at 9:30 am.  Clean up volunteers meet out front of the pavilion for clean up instructions from the Ranger.  Water, coffee, and soda are available anytime, just ask.

And... Who says there are no more free lunches these days?  Participants will enjoy lunch cooked by the Central Whidbey Lions.  CWL will cook lunch (our “all beef” hot dogs of course!) for all participants and other Zone H-7 clubs will contribute side dishes & dessert to make this a complete lunch! Lunch begins at 11:30 and continues until everyone has been fed.

Central Whidbey Lions  “HANDS ON” PROJECTS

Is there a project that you would like to address?  Just let one of the board of  directors know.   All Central Whidbey Lions should be on the lookout for new projects.  Contact Bill Jones at stoli142@aol.com  if you have a “hands on project” that you think the club can possibly assist with.

Island County Museum Steps Project

Thank you to all Central Whidbey Lions who made sure that the steps and handrails were safe for visitors to the Island County Museum.

PRAIRIE WAYSIDE PARK ON ENGLE ROAD

Thank you to everyone who had a hand (shovel, chippers, clippers and other tools) in restoring the Prairie Wayside Park to a place where visitors can enjoy a view of the prairie.  After many years of neglect, the Central Whidbey Lions made the decision to take on the daunting task of trying to clear out the over growth, garbage and strangling sticker bushes that prevented visitors from a view of the prairie.  Thank you to Bill Jones, John Burks, Neal Amtmann, John Boone, Gerhard Matz, Jim Rich, Jack McPherson, Bill Pigott, Gary Giovannoni,  Wayne Flatten, Paul Weatherly, and Don and Bert Piercy for their moral support.  A special thank you to Jack and Mayor Nancy for arranging to have the large mower come cut through all those thick bushes.  That saved some back breaking, days worth of hand work!

Thank you to all who had a hand in restoring and preserving this natural resource.  You have made a difference!

Pending building projects (In the upcoming weeks & months):  All these projects need volunteer builders.  Can you be the one to help?  Contact Bill Jones, and thanks!

Wood Cutting and Loading Project

From Bill Jones:  We will be working on cutting and loading wood on Thursday 12 April 2012 starting at 0930 to take to the super-secret woodlot for splitting at a later date.  Meet at the drain field at the top of the road on Race Road and Belvedere Place. You can park along the side of the road.  I will take my truck in and out so we can deliver it to the lot. We will need several chain saws and a lot of help loading and unloading.  We have about ten or so trees to cut up and about four or five already cut and ready to load.  Given enough people I plan to have one team to load and unload the truck and drive between my place and the super secret woodlot and two teams cutting the trees.

The rest of the wood on South Whidbey will be cut in a week or two and then in another week or two we can get some splitting parties and hopefully a couple of splitters.   If you have a truck and can help move wood from the south end site to Neal's place, please contact Bill ASAP and let him know you are available so he can coordinate a day for all the moving.

Let Bill Jones know if you can come and help with either or both of these projects.

Eagle Scout Project Work Party:

Blake Bailey's, Eagle Scout Building Project will be held on 28 April at South Whidbey State Park.  we will be installing the benches on Saturday 28 April. I will let you know about a starting time as soon as I know whether or not we will be cementing. Either 0900 or 1200.  If we have to cement, we may need a generator that can handle my 120 volt mixer.

The Whidbey Playhouse Group project building several props for a play, some of  which will then be donated to the Coupeville High School. (time frame: over the next 7 months).  Props to be built:  a workbench, kitchen shelf flats, eyebrow roof for barn (prop), kitchen table, barn door, loft door, crates and round barrels.  To benefit the community at large.

Details are pending, and as more information is received, we will pass it along via e-mail.  If you want to help, contact Bill Jones (stoli142@aol.com) or Jim Rich at (jim.rich1940@gmail.com)

Firewood is ready and available for needy families.  Contact Bill Jones at stoli142@aol.com  if you know of someone who could use our help.  Many families have benefited from our efforts to reclaim/recycle/reuse downed wood from several properties.

TOGETHER WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

Thank you to all the Central Whidbey Lions “Lumber jacks” for your efforts to help people heat their homes this coming winter.
